It's one thing to be able to set up search patterns and navigate the rescue vessels but the most important aspect of a search is actually being able to spot the person or vessel you are looking for in the water. For this reason the unit spent the evening studing the oberservational theory module. This module covers the theory and techniques used to effectively locate missing people and vessels etc.
The unit covered visual, audible and radar searches. Crew management, night searches and search planning. Over the next few weeks the unit will be putting these skills into practice with a number of simulated practical searches.
