Split training between the watches tonight.

Red watch took TPR out and did man over board training.  Blue & Green watch did hazard assessment and start up procedures on Pelorus.

Weekly training session for the Day Crew. Practiced performing a beach landing to simulate dropping a medic on the beach at Green Bay to attend to a victim and recovering that person back on board.

Blue watch took TPR up Onepoto Inlet for familiarisation and Man over board practise.  They then went out to Pukerua Bay and did more man over board training on the way.  Gary showed the crew where the 'sate' spot at Brendans beach (weather / tides dependant) were to offload personal onto beach if required in rescue situation.

Tue, 21/02/2012 Tuesday night training

Split training session across on the water and land-based fire pump training with Porirua Volunteer Fire.

Trust Porirua Rescue went out with a crew and did a hazard assessment and high speed manouvering. They also took out a photographer Kapi-Mana newspaper for an area familiarisation and photography session in Titahi Bay and at Mana Island.

The rest of the team learned and practiced working fire pumps with the fire crew. Coastguard Mana's pump was used as well as a high power pump and the fire truck.

Extremely heavy weather training on CRV Trust Porirua Rescue this week. 35kt NW winds, gusting 40. 2-3m swells and breaking waves across the bar.

The day crew practised recovery options for people in the water, the session started with a hazard assesment and options for recovery.  On land practise session and then onto Porirua Rescue for an alongside lesson.

Chris D was kitted out in his brand new dry suit and had no problems taking to the wate as our willing victim;

Dry run for Grand Traverse - testing communication spots

4 x 4 went up Colonial Knob, to the Airstrip & Onepoto point to test for Kayak leg

TPR went down Open Bay / Green Point area ready for run leg

Pelorus surveyed Onepoto inlet area for possible danger areas with low tide in channel

Communications checked / relayed in form of a crossword - Base had number of  letters in each answer; Pelorus had the clues to relay to TPR for answers

Outgoing & incoming Coastguard presidents were visiting unit for evening - went out on TPR

  • anchoring from stern in Green Bay

Rod, Peter & Alan took the team through the concepts around the new Operations group - who is responsible for what and where there are opporutnities for us all to be involved.

We then went through the Induction part of the Trainee handbook - to refresh those that have been in the Unit for some time and to cover for any new crew that have missed any sessions.  Covered NZ Coastguard structure; NZ SAR structure / responsibilities; Unit Health & Safety policy; and Crew personal safety.

Group split into two groups tonight.

Group one went out in TPR for Local Area familarisation - going into Titahi Bay, over to Mana Island to see the various mooring points at the southern end, before returning to base.

Group two initally went out to do cross bearings with hand held compasses to start learning how to plot positions onto the charts.  Group then split further - two went out in 4x4 to Plimmerton area to take 3 readings on the yellow bouy.  These details were to be radioed to base for the other two to plot on the chart position of the marker bouy.

Stretcher Exercise
Two teams located victims and assessed their injuries.
Their recovery was then planned after reviewing layout of building.
One team secured patient in stretcher while other team assisted in carrying stretcher to a
safe area.
Roles were then reversed

Crew split into 3 groups to do a practical SAR communications exercise after last weeks theory.

One group went to take Pelorus out to act as "lost" boat - they had issues with their GPS and radios (hand held) so were unable to complete the exercise.

TPR started with bumps & grinds in the marina, before heading out to do some boat handling exercises.  While out at sea, for exercise TPR got base to turn off TracPlus - radioed in they were "lost" and gave basic bearings for IMT team to plot where they are.

Weather was too rough for towing practical training.  Crew spent time cleaning the base and boats, as welll as going through each boat from stern to bow locating items to confirm they knew where everything was & what the use was.

Tonight was used to sort out sizing of wet weather gear prior to allocation of personal sets.   We also went through the start up / close down procedures for TPR with all crew present, ready to put in place the 'Hot Launch' system.

Training time tonight was used to allocate most crew with their own wet weather gear for using when out training or on call out jobs.  The new crew container was put to good use for issuing and hanging new gear.
