Sun, 01/02/2015 Mana Rescue 1; training session

Early start to sunday morning with 6 crew working the new rescue boat,

Training was directed at masters who have to recertify onto this boat from the old protector and work completed included:  use of the jet unit, turns in place, use of the throttle/buck at low speeds to increase manoureving ability, speed work, sharp turns (for search patterns, S turns, maintaining station on a buoy and wharf, working around the pile lines (forward and reverse) coming alongside a vessell, control in choppy seas, quick stops and berthing.

Sat, 31/01/2015 Support vessel for Mana Ocean Challenge

Coastguard Mana took out CRV Pelorus and a crew to spend some time on the water and support the Mana Ocean Challenge as a safety vessel while 7x 6-man waka-ama raced for 39km between Mana and Paraparaumu.

Fri, 30/01/2015 Mana Rescue 1 sea trials

Mana Rescue 1 was launched on the 24th January and today was the first sea trial.  work included refuelling, manaouvreing in comfined spaces, 360 turns in place, sitting on a buoy, slow, medium and high speed turns.

The boat performed well with no problems occurring, Mana Rescue 1 and our masters are now in training mode as the masters must re-certify on the boat which has a diesel driven jet unit (the old boat having twin outboards)

 14:30- MR 1 system checks prior to sea trials, started first time.

 15:15-Maneuver to fuel berth, load fuel

 15:30 -Depart for full power trials Onepoto arm of Porirua harbour.

17:30 Back alongside, sea trials completed.

Practical training on Pelorus towing around a dinghy half-filled with water in confined spaces around the bridges in the channel. Lots of manouvring and 'challenges'.

The dingly was then put on anchor while the crew performed helm and rope handling excercises on the pole moorings.

Advanced helm training for Jacob. Gery and Carl working the lines doing tow line setups (both long tow and rafting up alongside).

Sat, 22/11/2014 Personal Safety and MOSS

Mark ran a practical training session at the base to go over the Personal Safety (suitable use of wet weather gear, PFDs and other safety gear) as well going through the SSM manual (now called MOSS) to learn about the various parts that make up the Safe Ship Management systems that we use in the unit as a commercial operation.

This is the practical sign-off component of the theory modules that were taught in the classroom previously.

James Pinchin facilitated the first part of this module which included a visit to the Titahi Bay Fire Station and practical training with fire extinguishers. The theory module is expected to be completed next week.

Practical training session on tides , calculating tides and using the nautical alminac to do secondary port calculations.

Sat, 15/11/2014 Heavy weather

After rescuing a yacht we headed out onto the Mana bar to do some heavy weather training on Pelorus in the breaking waves kicked up by 30-40kt winds. The windsufers were out in force and we managed a couple of crossings out to Tokaapapa Reef before heading back in.

Practical excercises on Pelorus in Evans Bay, Wellington with a number of trainee instructors from the Coastguard Central Region. Trainees were required to run multiple training scenarios as part of getting sign-off to become "Coastguard Instructor" or "Regional Coastguard Instructor" trainers.

Sun, 22/06/2014 Plimmerton Kindy Mid Winter Swim

TPR towed Pelorus over to Karehana Bay (Plimmerton) to observe the Plimmerton Kindergarten midwinter swim before continuing out towards Mana Island. There we dropped a GPS tracker buoy to track the tidal flow from tidal diamond A (near Mana Is) whilst doing towing and rafting up manouvres with Pelorus as a target vessel. 

The buoy was then retrieved 1hr 26mins later and had travelled north a distance of 1.22NM.

Sun, 01/06/2014 Sunday training on Pelorus

We did the pole mooring excercise with Pelorus where the crew have to manouvre the vessel from pole to pole along the line with one line attached to a pole at all times. This excercise tests not only the helmperson's ability to handle the boat but also maintainclear and concise communications with the person handling the bowline and the person on the sternline.

Rotated all positions through each crew member.
