Fast track masters training out across bar to wards Mana in simulated search. No GPS/Plotter following pilotage to intersect transit line between Rocky Bay and Tea gardens on Goat point leads. Forecast to turn Southerly 50 knots. Observed front approaching and estimated time until it arrived. Did some MOB practice drifting on abeam. Pilotage skills tested to mark position. Returned with no outer starboard lateral or inner leads working. We knew this on way out and planned accordingly. Another good session with lots of learning to be done by all.

On-water session to run through observation techniques practical and assessment. 

We also then ran through some CRV System Familiarisation assessments whilst alongside at the end of the day.

Planned pilotage to leads and then outside Grandfather rocks and into Plimmerton Boat Club jetty. Route planned and logged, marked on chart. Master, navigator and helm appointed. MR2 launched full of fuel, trouble with start up of GPS, powered down and restarted. Nav light still snafu. Despite forecast and tide checks aborted plan at bar due to bar working in an unexpected way. Did MOB 3 times on way back trialling different methods. Lost bulb section of horseshoe buoy and batteries, became detatched when thrown in as marker, will need replacing asap.

Work commitments and illness limited attendance to 1 trainee and crew

Crew were tasked with taking MR2 under tow from MR1 and putting MR2 on the mooring bouy just over the bar.

The navigator was then tasked to plan and execute a circumnavigation of Tokaapapa Reef before returning to pick up MR2 and towing her home.

Sun, 23/08/2015 Navigation and Helm training

We took MR1 on a navigation excercise to the moorings at Mana Island, Green Point, Titahi Bay and home.

Crew members worked on:

  • Use of radar to determine distance and bearing of land features
  • Use of radar to keep a safe distance off the land
  • Plotting a route with multiple waypoints and giving the helmsman instructions on course to steer, etc
  • Clear communications between nav and helm
  • Not getting seasick at the nav station when under way in rough seas!

Night excercise in heavy weather (30-40 knots) out to Mana Island DOC moorings.

Trainee volunteers were tasked with forming a crew, assigning roles and planning a passage out to Mana Island.

Towing session using both MR1 and MR2 (as the "casualty") to assess the Trainee-to-Operational crew members. Things to be assessed included:

  • identifying and using the correct equipment
  • demonstrate the procedures for rigging a tow and general rope work
  • identify hazards associated with towing
  • communication between crew members to ensure the tow is set up efficiently and safely

Deck; touch and go on marks, pick ups,

crew rotation was practised for helm and deck, active closed loop communications and correct target reporting

The crew on MR1 carried out a number of tasks based around safe ship management,

Helm, tracking and transits, maintaining search speed. High speed manaouvring on targets in the water, fast pick ups. heavy weather handling was tested in the higher sea states outside of the harbour.

Navigation: working the electronic suite,radar (setting range marker) and GPS course to steer, MOB, plus visual navigation

Command process and tutoring

All crew particpated in the CRM process of positive confirmation on command communications

We ran a boat handling session for a couple of trainees to get familiar with boat handling in tight spots. Manuevring in the marina, anchoring in the channel, coming alongside, departing, etc.

Doug facilitated a practical session to locate all gear etc on both vessels. Started by paper exercise building on last weeks theory and then confirming amending or adding things by actually looking on the boats. Great turnout in bad weather conditions, rewarded with choccie biscuits. Thanks to Chris D and Jake for facilitating groups

Crew gathered to test their chart reading, communication, local knowledge, and radio skills.

Area Familirization (local knowledge) can be of great assistance when Coastguard are preparing to help someone in trouble at sea.  It is quite common for casualties to not know exactly where they are and to sometimes underestimate the risk that they have.

Took MR1 out in rough conditions near Mana Island and ran through some search patterns, establishing sweep width, man overboard drills, etc.

The session started off with a visit from the Wellington Maritime Police team to introduce themselves and run us through the software they use for defining search areas/patterns.

Crew went through hot launch of MR2 and knots as per the training modules. Practiced throwing heaving lines, throw bags and life-ring. Also rope throwing around the poles at the end of the piers. Specific attention was given to three new crew members who we taken through the hot launch and recovery checklists and participated in the other activities as well.

Early start to sunday morning with 6 crew working the new rescue boat,

Training was directed at masters who have to recertify onto this boat from the old protector and work completed included:  use of the jet unit, turns in place, use of the throttle/buck at low speeds to increase manoureving ability, speed work, sharp turns (for search patterns, S turns, maintaining station on a buoy and wharf, working around the pile lines (forward and reverse) coming alongside a vessell, control in choppy seas, quick stops and berthing.

Sat, 31/01/2015 Support vessel for Mana Ocean Challenge

Coastguard Mana took out CRV Pelorus and a crew to spend some time on the water and support the Mana Ocean Challenge as a safety vessel while 7x 6-man waka-ama raced for 39km between Mana and Paraparaumu.

Fri, 30/01/2015 Mana Rescue 1 sea trials

Mana Rescue 1 was launched on the 24th January and today was the first sea trial.  work included refuelling, manaouvreing in comfined spaces, 360 turns in place, sitting on a buoy, slow, medium and high speed turns.

The boat performed well with no problems occurring, Mana Rescue 1 and our masters are now in training mode as the masters must re-certify on the boat which has a diesel driven jet unit (the old boat having twin outboards)

Practical training on Pelorus towing around a dinghy half-filled with water in confined spaces around the bridges in the channel. Lots of manouvring and 'challenges'.

The dingly was then put on anchor while the crew performed helm and rope handling excercises on the pole moorings.
