We relocated a yacht from it's berth in the Marina to the breastworks so that it can lifted out for engine repairs. 

We used this as a training excercise for teamwork and rope work.

initial look at where everything is situated on MR1, recorded on sheets and hopefully to be learned! 

The idea is to locate all items in all lockers, shelves and pockets. Eventually crew should be able to locate named items blindfolded.

Practical session for MR2 familiarisation starting with bringing it round from park, opening all lockers, investigating all bags and containers. All gear dicussed and logged on outline sheets for recall and testing later. Kate lead discussion and Jason supervised. Kate is up to standard to pass CRV fam for MR2 just needs to do MR1 next week

Seamanship and ropework skills put into practice by roping a concrete yacht from breastworks around to raft upto moored reat exercise in MR1 and then returned to breastworsks. Great exercise in teamwork and rope handling

Thu, 23/11/2017 Training search for sunken vessel

Upon reports of a vessel that had sunk on or near Tokaapapa Reef (Grandfather Rocks) yesterday, a trainee crew went out and did an area familiarisation around the rocks in an effort to also try and spot any evidence of a vessel or gear. 

A shoreline search was also performed from Plimmerton Boating Club back around the shore to Mana.

A man overboard procedure was also executed to practice the process of recovering a crew member as part of our MOSS safety system.

Started by bringing Santa across from the fuel berth to the Mana Crusing Club children's Christmas party.

Followed up with some helm training under the bridges and in Paremata Harbour.

Thu, 14/12/2017 We are coastguard, this is what we do

The local sea scout unit organised to visit us, Alice a 13 year old was doing a leadership badge and had to organise an event so she asked us to do an education session for them. 18 sea scouts and associated leaders turned up and were treated to a rundown of the IMT room, shown a video and given a chat on 'we are coastguard', did some ropework and then had a wee ticky tour out and around grandfather Reef on MR2. They really enjoyed it and thanked us profusely. Well worth the dffort on our behalf to do good PR and sow the seeds for future crew?

MR1 with crew went for some helm and crew level training, close manouvering, pickups, line handling, navigation, observation .

The night went well and we completed some MOSS drills (MOB, electronic failure, Fire), the elcronic failure became an extended problem which tested the crew and was succesfuly resolved.

Sun, 04/02/2018 exercise Delight

Delight grounded on mudflats near navigation leads. A 5bton vessel from Kyttleton ran aground at high water looking for safe anchorage. Training crew put a heavy bow anchor on for them and secured their lighter anchor to the stern. we will see if the float tonight and may ned to tow them off tomorrow on the 1400 high tide

Wed, 14/02/2018 Exercise Waitangi Day

MR1 with 3 crew went out to support Waka and other sea based activities in the Onepoto arm of Porirua Harbour.

Great day with lots of activiy on the water.  MR1 retained a presence in the area and went through helm and search pattern training with 2 crew. MOSS drills completed were MOB, injury, fire, collision, steering, pollution.

Thu, 15/02/2018 Water Safety training in the pool

2 instructors took 6 crew through the water saftey practical on thursday evening.

Crew went through the 5 minute float with no support, fitting lifejackets and how to use them, manaual inflation in the water, swimming as a team, use of the lifraft and then general water safety information to supplement the personal safety module

4 crew were given live Co2 canisters to practise a live inflation

Trainees and sarex volunteers did practical victim recovery of real 'victims' from both MR1 and MR2

victims simulated hypothermia and distress as well as stroppyness. Recovery over stern of MR1 was copmared to over the bags and also a stretcher was used from the stern

A large sea kayak fest was being held at Ngatitoa Domain this weekend. Satuday bewteen 1000 and 1200 a group of kayakers worked with our crew to refine our kayker recovery procedures for MR1 and MR2. A combination of moored testing and free floating practise was used to develop and extend our recovery procedures.Recovery of a kayker and kayak, recovery of person in the water, multiple person recovery practises

 MR1 used the a kayak group that was heading to green point for on scene command, search pattern development and planning as part of pour SAREX18 developemnt training. We shadowed the kayak group out to Green Point  with MR1 working through the radio commands, search pattern vessel placement, station keeping and ship to shore communication considerations and methods

Coastguard Mana are runing IMT training to support thevunits actions during SAREX18

crew worked through a basic scenario with the SARNZ documents for inital assessment, timelines, search scenarios, vectors planning, questions and resources that could be used.

crew split into navigation/helm and deck crew fir tonights training.

Nav/helm worked on course control and radar naviagtion in around the bar. Deck crew worked through landmark identifcation, calling navigation marks, manual depth sounding and mooring.

Crew were briefed on SAREX 18 and then went through a faciliated workshop on GSMEAC and Incident Management Team activity

GSMEAC is an acronym that can be used for both Incident Management and its a briefing format.

G= Ground    where is the task/job/situation   

S= Situation           what is/has happened, a picture of the incident

The training session was an initial introduction to MR2 with shore and on water elements, these consisted of; Launch, recovery and fueling - mooring the vessel to a pontoon - basic control functions, engine & steering - initial practical appreciation of helm and engine controls, practice steering along a lead lines  - Local area familiarisation; navigation markers within the inner and outer harbour areas - pick up and release vessel from fixed mooring buoy - theory and practical MOB .

SAREX18 kicked off with a real call out for an overturned Waka. 

Coastguard Mana was activated using the standard callout procedure from our duty officer and then crew notifications by text message. The crew assembled at our base at the Mana Cruising Club and broke into an Incident Management Team and  a boat deployment team.

Sat, 21/04/2018 MR2: Trainee group - MOSS & CRM theory and practical

The aim of the training session covered the theory of MOSS drills and CRM, completion of risk assessment matrix, weather & tidal considerations prior to vessel deployment. This was followed with practical application on-water of the theoretical learning.  Other aspects of the session included local area familiarisation; navigation markers within the inner harbour area - pick up and release vessel from fixed mooring buoy - mooring a vessel between two piles.
